2026 Auto Recalls: First Half Hits Near-Decade Low

Total automotive recalls in China in the first half of 2026 hit a near-decade low, but July alone saw 252,100 vehicles recalled — over 8,000 vehicles per day due to quality defects. The proportion of NEV recalls continues to rise, drawing industry attention.

First Half Recall Data

According to statistics from China Auto Recall, in February 2026, 3,582 valid complaints were received, up 7.70% month-on-month, with 183 dispute resolution applications received. Complaints involved 627 vehicle models, down 28.26% month-on-month.

The overall recall volume in the first half was the lowest in nearly a decade, reflecting an overall improvement in automotive manufacturing quality. However, it should be noted that some companies may have insufficient willingness to initiate voluntary recalls.

July Recall Surge

In July, domestic auto recalls totaled 252,100 vehicles — over 8,000 vehicles per day due to quality defects. To put this in perspective, 252,100 is roughly equivalent to the monthly sales of a leading new force brand.

NEV Recall Proportion Rising

While complete brand distribution data is unavailable, the trend is clear: NEV recall proportions continue to rise. This is primarily related to the rapid adoption of new technologies, frequent software iterations, and the complexity of three-electric systems. OTA remote upgrades have become the primary method for addressing software-related recalls, with some defects fixable online without requiring owners to visit service centers.

Consumer Advice

Owners should regularly monitor recall announcements from the SAMR Defective Product Management Center and promptly contact authorized dealers for free repairs. Used car buyers should verify whether vehicles have completed recall repairs.
