Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles Enter a New Industrial Cycle

At the opening of the 15th Five-Year Plan, the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle industry is welcoming key development opportunities. With national standards counting down and multiple listed companies turning profitable, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles have entered a new industrial cycle.

Four-Year Demonstration Successfully Concluded

Entering 2026, as China’s 14th Five-Year Plan concludes and the 15th begins, the four-year fuel cell vehicle demonstration program has successfully concluded. China’s fuel cell vehicle annual sales have exceeded 10,000 units, with the commercial vehicle market leading globally.

Achievements over four years of demonstration include: significant improvement in key technology levels, with domestic content of core components such as membrane electrodes and bipolar plates substantially increased; steady progress in hydrogen refueling station infrastructure; and phased results in business model exploration, with replicable operational models in commercial vehicle scenarios such as logistics and public transit.

National Standards Imminent

FAW Jiefang is leading the revision of the GB/T 34593 Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle series standards, which will provide more comprehensive technical specifications for the design, production, and testing of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Crossing the Valley of Death

Academician Ouyang Minggao of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and chairman of the International Hydrogen Energy and Fuel Cell Association stated at the 2026 International Hydrogen Energy and Fuel Cell Vehicle Conference: We have crossed the valley of death and are now entering a phase of normal development. China is leading the global renewable energy revolution, and the next five years will be an important window for breakthroughs in hydrogen, energy storage, and smart technology.

The 15th Five-Year Plan lists hydrogen as a future industry and new economic growth point. The hydrogen energy and fuel cell vehicle industry will enter a new stage of scaled development, gradually becoming a strategic industry for China to lead the global energy transformation.
