On August 12, 2026, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) released a set of data destined to be cited repeatedly: in July, the monthly sales share of new energy vehicles (NEVs) exceeded 60% for the first time, reaching 60.4%; in the first seven months of this year, cumulative NEV sales reached 9.007 million units, with a cumulative penetration rate of 51.2%, surpassing 50% for the first time.
Two Historic Firsts
The monthly NEV sales share exceeding 60% for the first time and the cumulative share surpassing 50% for the first time — these two milestones mark a new stage in the structural transformation of China’s automotive market.
Previously, the over-50% claim mostly applied to the passenger vehicle category or the domestic sales market. Now, NEVs have surpassed 50% cumulative penetration across all vehicle categories (including commercial vehicles), meaning that more than 6 out of every 10 new cars sold are new energy vehicles.
Changes in the Passenger Vehicle Rankings
In July, new energy models occupied 9 of the top 10 retail sales positions for passenger vehicles, with only one traditional fuel vehicle remaining. In the first half of the year, three Chinese automakers entered the global top 10 brands simultaneously, leveraging their advantages in new energy technology.
Data shows that in the first seven months, China’s automobile production and sales reached 17.567 million and 17.602 million units respectively, with NEV production and sales at 9.014 million and 9.007 million units, both growing nearly 10% year-on-year.
Industry Impact
These two breakthroughs signify that NEVs are no longer a supplement but the market mainstream. This will have profound implications for the upstream and downstream supply chains, dealer systems, aftermarket services, and urban infrastructure development.
