The 2025/26 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship held Rounds 12 and 13 at the Shanghai International Circuit. This marks Formula E’s return to Shanghai and an important node in the acceleration of electric racing technology transfer to production vehicles.
Race Background
The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is the world’s first FIA-certified all-electric single-seater racing championship and the only sporting event to receive net-zero carbon certification. Season 12 is the final competitive season for the GEN3 EVO car, after which the all-new GEN4 car will make its debut in Season 13 (2026/27).
Nissan’s Role
The Nissan Formula E Team’s performance at the Shanghai event drew significant attention. As one of the few global automakers simultaneously participating in electric racing and producing electric vehicles, Nissan continuously transfers technologies developed on the track — including battery management, motor efficiency, and energy recovery — to production models.
Formula E serves as an extreme testing platform for EV technology: from battery thermal management to electric control strategies, from energy recovery efficiency to lightweight material applications, every breakthrough on the track accelerates technological progress in production EVs.
Technical Value of Electric Racing
Technology transfer from electric racing is mainly reflected in: optimized battery management systems improving production vehicle range; upgraded electric control algorithms improving daily driving energy efficiency; and lightweight materials and aerodynamic design concepts being applied to production vehicle design.
Event Impact
The Shanghai race attracted large audiences and media attention, effectively raising Chinese market awareness of electric racing and electric mobility.
