At the New Energy Vehicle Intelligent Powertrain Innovation Forum, participating experts agreed that in the second half of the electrification transition, hybrid technology has been upgraded from a transitional solution to a long-term mainstream route, accelerating toward high voltage, long range, high efficiency, all-scenario capability, and intelligence.
Evolution of Technology Routes
An academician from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and distinguished professor at Hong Kong Polytechnic University pointed out that hybrid technology is not a bridge to pure electric but an independent technology route that will run in parallel with pure electric over the long term. Globally, the energy structure, climate conditions, and consumer habits of different regions determine the long-term value of hybrid technology.
Series-Parallel Hybrid Becomes Mainstream
Currently, new-generation hybrid platforms achieve seamless transitions between engine direct-drive, motor drive, and hybrid drive through intelligent mode switching, significantly improving fuel economy and driving smoothness. The fuel consumption in depleted battery mode has been generally controlled at 4-6L.
Global PHEV Market Data
The global plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) market achieved a historic breakthrough in 2025, with annual sales reaching approximately 6.8 million units, a year-on-year increase of 32.4%. This growth was primarily driven by tightening European carbon emission regulations, deepening of China’s dual-credit policy, and growing demand for low-emission vehicles in North America.
Future Direction
Hybrid technology will accelerate toward five directions: high voltage (800V platform), long range (pure electric range 200km+), high efficiency (thermal efficiency over 45%), all-scenario coverage (from city to highway), and intelligence (AI energy management).
